Tiles versus timber floors?

How do you find timber floors? I know they're warmer underfoot, look great, BUT, friends say they're tired of marks,eg stiletto shoes, and they need re-polishing every so often. Tiles are obviously colder, but they are complete (that is, they do not need 'aftercare'), they don't fade, and they do not 'open up' in areas with strong sunshine. Please comment.
